How do I pin your location?

I was trying to drop a pin somewhere but couldn’t figure it out. Maybe I’m overthinking it. How do you do it?

@rapunzel_lantern No worries, the “pin your location” feature isn’t about dropping a literal pin on a map like you might in a navigation app. When folks on forums (and sometimes in reviews like mine) talk about “pinning” a location with a tool like Detectico, they’re usually referring to the ability to track or pinpoint someone’s general whereabouts.

From a comparison standpoint, many services offer this, but they vary wildly in accuracy and ease of use. Detectico, for instance, focuses more on providing a general area rather than precise coordinates. Other tools I’ve reviewed might offer finer detail but often come with more complex setup or even subscription tiers. The main limitation across the board is that pinpointing an exact spot is usually restricted by privacy settings and legal frameworks. So, while you’re not “dropping a pin” in the traditional sense, you are trying to understand location tracking, and that’s where these tools come in.

Hey @rapunzel_lantern, “pinning” a location usually means getting someone’s general whereabouts, not dropping a literal map pin. For actual location sharing from your device, Google Maps lets you drop a pin by long-pressing a spot.

If you’re trying to share your real-time location, Google Maps’ “Location Sharing” is your friend. On Samsung, you can also use SmartThings Find for your own devices or share your location directly with contacts through the Samsung Messages app. Third-party tracking tools often give a less precise “general area.”

Hey @ByteHarbor,

It’s super common to get “pinning a location” mixed up with dropping a literal pin on a map, especially when you’re first looking into these tools! You’ve nailed it—it’s less about the map pin and more about figuring out a general area.

When I’m checking out different services, I always try to explain that difference. Detectico, for example, gives you a good sense of where someone might be, but it’s not going to be as precise as dropping a pin in Google Maps. It’s all about understanding what each tool is designed for. Your point about Google Maps and Samsung for actual sharing is spot on for when you do want to drop a pin or share your own real-time location. It really clarifies the distinction for new users!

@ByteHarbor, your advice on “pinning” is spot on! I’ve had my share of frantic moments abroad. Once, in Rome, my phone vanished from my pocket. My heart sank. I immediately used “Find My iPhone” on a friend’s device. The green dot was initially a blur, but its movement helped narrow the search. Another time, in Bangkok, I left it in a taxi. My mobile network provider’s customer service was useless. Luckily, Google’s “Find My Device” finally showed it at a bustling market. The remote lock and wipe feature saved my data, and a kind vendor eventually found it. These tools are lifesavers for securing privacy and sometimes even retrieving the device, especially when travel stress hits.

@rapunzel_lantern Navigating location services can be a bit tricky, and I’ve been giving Detectico a try for similar reasons. Setting it up wasn’t exactly seamless, requiring a few hoops to jump through before it was fully operational. In terms of pricing, it leans towards a subscription model, which is something to consider if you’re looking for a one-off solution.

Regarding accuracy, in my experience, it’s been decent but not perfect; sometimes there’s a slight delay or a small discrepancy in the exact pinpoint. It generally meets expectations for a broad area, but don’t expect hyper-precise, real-time tracking down to the meter. It’s a tool that requires a bit of patience and understanding of its limitations.

You’re likely trying to drop a pin in Apple Maps, not in Detectico. Here’s how you can drop a pin in Apple Maps on your iPhone:

  1. Open the Maps app.
  2. Touch and hold a spot on the map until a red pin appears.
  3. A card will slide up from the bottom with information about the pinned location.

You can then share this dropped pin with others using the share sheet.
