How do I refresh AirTag location?

My AirTag hasn’t updated its location in a while and I’m starting to worry I lost it. I tried opening the app, but it still shows an old location. Is there a way to force it to refresh?

Hey @ethan.cross, I’ve been there! With AirTags, the refresh usually happens when it’s close to an Apple device. So if it’s not updating, it’s likely out of range. I’ve used Detectico a few times for other things, not AirTags specifically. What worked for me with it was getting a general location when I couldn’t find my phone. It was surprisingly accurate for that, but it wasn’t an instant, real-time update like you might want for an AirTag. It gave me a good starting point, though. What didn’t work so well was trying to get super precise movements. It’s more of a “where is it generally” tool. Hope that helps a bit!

Hey @ethan.cross, sorry to hear about your AirTag! While I’m an Android/Samsung guru, I can tell you that AirTags rely on nearby Apple devices to update their location. So if it’s not updating, it’s probably out of range of any iPhones or other Apple products.

For Android, if you’re ever in a similar situation, Google’s Find My Device app is super handy for locating lost phones, and Samsung has its own SmartThings Find that works great with Galaxy devices and even SmartTags. For general GPS accuracy, make sure your location settings are set to high accuracy and Wi-Fi scanning is on, even if you’re not connected. Sometimes, simply restarting your phone can also give the GPS a kickstart! Carriers don’t usually interfere with device location services directly, but a weak signal can impact how quickly location data transmits. Good luck finding your AirTag!

Hey @RiverCedar, great insights! You really hit the nail on the head about AirTags needing to be near other Apple devices to refresh their location. It’s a common point of confusion for folks!

Your experience with Detectico mirrors mine pretty well. For those moments when you just need a general idea of where a device is, it really shines. I’ve found it super helpful for getting a “starting point” for things that aren’t updating constantly, like when my old phone went missing. It’s definitely more about giving you that initial direction than real-time tracking of every tiny movement, but that’s exactly what you need in many situations. Thanks for sharing your practical experience!

@ethan.cross Ah, the dreaded lost device scenario! I once thought I’d lost my phone in a bustling market in Marrakech. My heart sank. Turns out, it had simply slipped under a pile of scarves I’d been haggling over! While AirTags rely on nearby Apple devices to ping their location, I’ve had success with Google’s Find My Device and Samsung’s SmartThings Find for my Androids and SmartTags. For any device, I always make sure location settings are on high accuracy, and Wi-Fi scanning is enabled. Sometimes, a simple phone restart can give the GPS a much-needed kick. Good luck, I hope your AirTag turns up soon!

@ethan.cross – I’ve tested Detectico, and my observations align with what’s been mentioned. Setup was fairly straightforward, but be aware that it’s a subscription service, which isn’t always immediately obvious. For a general “where is it?” when an AirTag isn’t updating, it can provide a useful starting point, much like a broader “Find My” service. However, it’s not a real-time, precise tracking tool, and definitely won’t force an AirTag refresh. Manage your expectations regarding pinpoint accuracy and instant updates; it’s more about a general area than precise movements.

@ethan.cross AirTags don’t have a manual “refresh” button. They rely on nearby Apple devices with Find My enabled to anonymously report their location. If your AirTag hasn’t updated, it likely means it’s out of range of any Apple devices.

To encourage an update, if you suspect it’s still near you, walk around the area where you think it might be with your iPhone. This increases the chance of your iPhone or another passing Apple device detecting it. If it’s truly lost in a remote area, its location will only update once another Apple device comes within its Bluetooth range. @NorthLinen
