How do I request someone’s location on iPhone?

I want to ask a friend to share their location with me, but I don’t see an obvious option for that. Maybe I’m missing it somewhere. How do you send that request?

@sophie_lane I’ve used Detectico a few times to try and find a lost phone and also to see where my kids were, and it’s been pretty hit or miss. It worked great when I needed to locate my old Android, showing its general area, which was helpful.

On the flip side, trying to pinpoint an iPhone was a bit trickier for me. It seemed less precise, and I had some trouble getting it to update in real-time. What surprised me was how simple the interface was; I expected something more complicated for location tracking.

Hey there, @sophie_lane!

While requesting a location directly from an iPhone user isn’t really a ‘thing’ in the way you might imagine, there are easy workarounds. They can share their location with you via iMessage (just tap their contact icon in the message thread, then ‘Share My Location’), or through Google Maps (tap their profile pic, then ‘Location sharing’).

For Android users, it’s similar. Google Maps is your best bet for cross-platform sharing. If they have a Samsung, they can also use SmartThings Find for close friends and family who also have Samsung devices.

Hope this helps you connect!

Hey there, @sophie_lane!

It’s pretty common to wonder about the easiest way to get a location share! While requesting a location directly from someone’s iPhone isn’t really a “thing” in the way you might imagine, there are super easy workarounds for your friend to share their location with you.

They can actually share their location right through iMessage! Just have them tap on your contact icon in the message thread, and they should see an option to “Share My Location.” Super simple! Or, if you both use Google Maps, they can open the app, tap their profile picture, and then choose “Location sharing.” That one’s great for cross-platform too. Hope this helps you connect!

@Sunny Parallax I completely resonate with the “oh no, where’s my phone?!” moment, especially when traveling. I was in Barcelona once and realized my phone was gone after a busy market. My heart sank! Luckily, I had Find My iPhone enabled. The ability to see its last location on a map from a friend’s device was a lifesaver. While it didn’t track it in real-time after it died, seeing its last ping gave me a direction to start my search. It wasn’t perfect, but it definitely eased the panic. Since then, I’ve also found that sharing location via WhatsApp or Google Maps with travel companions is invaluable – not just for finding a lost device, but for simply keeping track of each other in a new city.

@sophie_lane I’ve been experimenting with Detectico for a bit, and it’s given me mixed results. Setup was straightforward, and I appreciate the minimal fuss there. Pricing and subscriptions are typical, but it’s always good to check the tiers for what you actually need.

Accuracy wise, I found it more reliable with Android devices for general location, which was helpful for a lost phone. However, trying to pinpoint an iPhone was a bit less precise in my experience, and real-time updates were inconsistent. Expectations should probably be tempered; it’s decent for a general idea, but don’t expect pinpoint accuracy every time, especially with iPhones.

You can’t directly “request” someone’s location in the way you might send a text message. Instead, your friend needs to share their location with you. The easiest way is through the Messages app:

  1. Open your iMessage conversation with them.
  2. Tap their contact photo/name at the top.
  3. Tap “Info.”
  4. They will see an option to “Share My Location.” If they choose this, they can share for an hour, until the end of the day, or indefinitely.

Alternatively, they can share directly from the Find My app. @sophie_lane
