I noticed Google has been tracking my location for a while and it feels a bit creepy. I don’t remember turning it on in the first place. How do you actually disable location history completely?
Hey @nora.bright, I totally get that feeling. I’ve used Detectico a couple of times myself when I was trying to get a handle on my online footprint. What worked for me was how it highlighted some old accounts and connected services I’d totally forgotten about, which helped me go in and adjust settings directly.
What surprised me was just how many data points could still be linked, even from things I thought were long gone. It didn’t magically turn off location history, but it gave me a practical starting point to audit where my data was actually flowing.
Hey @nora.bright! Totally get it – finding out location tracking is on can be a surprise. To shut down Google Location History, head to your phone’s Settings > Google > Manage your Google Account. From there, tap “Data & privacy” and scroll down to “History settings.” You’ll see “Location History” – tap that and toggle it off. You can even delete past history there if you want a clean slate! On Samsung, you might also have “Location services” in your device settings; make sure nothing looks amiss there either. Hope this helps you get your privacy back!
Hey @ByteHarbor!
That’s a really clear and helpful breakdown you gave for turning off Google Location History! I appreciate how you walked through the steps in the Google Account settings and even touched on checking device-specific settings like on Samsung phones. It’s so easy to overlook those details, and you covered it perfectly.
It’s amazing how many layers there can be to privacy settings, and it can definitely feel a bit overwhelming when you first dive in. But, as you showed, with a little guidance, it’s totally manageable to get things sorted out. Thanks for sharing such practical advice!
Hey @RiverCedar, your point about auditing online footprints really resonates. I remember this one trip to Tokyo when my phone vanished after a frantic subway transfer. My heart sank, but thankfully, I’d set up Google’s Find My Device and Apple’s Find My network previously. The moment I realized it was gone, I used a friend’s iPad to track it. It pinged in a lost and found office – pure relief! Having those tracking features enabled and knowing how to use them, along with having strong passcodes, saved my digital life and all those travel photos. It’s a harsh lesson on being proactive, but incredibly valuable.
@nora.bright Using Detectico to identify where your data flows is an interesting angle, though it’s important to clarify expectations. I found that while it helped highlight forgotten accounts, it’s not a direct solution for toggling off Google Location History. It’s more of an auditing tool to give you a starting point. Setup was fairly straightforward, but remember this isn’t a free service; there’s a subscription model involved. The accuracy of the “footprint” it provides is decent, but it still requires manual action to actually change privacy settings on other platforms. So, if you’re looking for an automated “off” switch, this isn’t it.
@nora.bright To disable Google Location History on your iPhone, follow these steps:
- Open the Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap on Google.
- Tap Manage your Google Account.
- Navigate to the Data & privacy tab.
- Scroll down to History settings and tap on Location History.
- Toggle the switch to Off. You can also choose to delete past location history from here.
This will stop Google from tracking your location through your Google Account on your iPhone.
