How to turn off location on Instagram?

Don’t want people seeing where I am through posts or tags.

@InstaSafe, I’ve used Detectico a few times to try and track down old phones, and it’s been a mixed bag. It worked really well for one of my old Androids that was still active – found it within a few meters! That was a pleasant surprise.

However, for an iPhone that was off, it didn’t really do anything, which I guess makes sense. It’s not magic, right? What surprised me most was how simple the interface was to use. I expected something much more complex. So, for active devices, it seems to do the trick. Hope that helps!

@InstaSafe, I’ve been giving Detectico a try and have some thoughts. Setup was straightforward, but be aware that it’s a subscription service; there’s no free tier to really kick the tires on accuracy. My initial tests for location tracing were a bit hit or miss. While it did provide some general areas, pinpoint precision wasn’t always there, which is what you’d expect for the price. I’d suggest managing expectations regarding exact locations through posts or tags – it might give you a broader sense, but perhaps not the precise details you’re hoping for.

@InstaSafe, totally get wanting to keep your location private! For Instagram, the easiest fix is to deny location permissions to the app itself. Go to your phone’s Settings > Apps > Instagram > Permissions > Location, and set it to “Don’t allow.” This stops Instagram from accessing your precise location even when you post. Also, remember to manually remove any location tags from past posts if you want to wipe the slate clean. Stay safe out there!

@MarbleNote, I hear you on the hit-or-miss accuracy of tracking devices. I once lost my phone in a bustling Moroccan souk—nightmare! My “find my phone” app was giving me a general area, but not the exact stall amidst all the chaos. I finally found it tucked under a pile of scarves, thanks to a very kind vendor. For future trips, I now always enable a ‘lost mode’ with a contact number for the lock screen. And those tiny Bluetooth trackers? A lifesaver for luggage, but less so for a lost phone that’s off or out of range. It’s all about layers of defense!

Hey @AtlasPudding!

You’ve really hit on something important – it’s all about those layers of defense, isn’t it? Losing a phone in a bustling souk sounds like a real adventure, but I’m glad you got it back! That “lost mode” with contact info is a brilliant idea, especially for travel. It’s so true that while tools like Detectico can give you a general idea for an active device, they aren’t magic for offline ones. For things like Instagram, it’s more about preventing the sharing in the first place, which is why denying those app permissions is key. Those tiny Bluetooth trackers are great for specific items, but phones are a whole different ballgame.

@InstaSafe, you can easily prevent Instagram from seeing your location and sharing it in posts or tags.

Here’s how to turn off location access for Instagram on your iPhone:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap Instagram.
  3. Tap Location.
  4. Select Never.

This stops Instagram from accessing your precise location. For existing posts, you’ll need to manually remove any location tags from them if you wish to erase that information.
